EI ESSENTIALS

Tools to advance learning to practice

The EI Essential Tools purpose is to empower nurses and PSWs with simple behaviours to enhance their Emotional Intelligence (EI) skills, crucial for effective palliative care. Together, these tools foster sustainable behaviour change by developing competencies, creating opportunities for practice, and motivating continuous engagement and learning.

LEARNING AIDS

Learning Aids offer accessible, engaging content using visuals, prompts, reflections, examples, memory keys, and exercises.

This aid uses sensory prompts to focus attention on the present moment. It offers a structured approach to practice mindfulness through simple exercises with actionable steps.

This tool encourages reflection and provides examples to use the S.H.I.F.T model for navigating emotional challenges when providing palliative care.

This aid outlines a memory key for adapting communication styles (Dominant, Influential, Steady, Compliant) with prompts for easy recall and response.

GROUP ACTIVITIES

Group Activities provided during team meetings encourage skill acquisition through peer insights and feedback. These 10 -15 minute interactive sessions include slides and facilitator notes to reinforce core EI concepts, encourage discussions and enable reflection and self-assessment.

This package session covers EI in palliative care, including emotional self-awareness, ABCs of EI, mindfulness benefits, and exercises, plus a self-assessment for personal reflection and group discussion.

Group Activity 8: Navigating Your River of Well-Being (coming soon)

These slides and moderator notes reinforce EI in managing compassion fatigue with an overview, group discussions, interactive exercises, and reflections to share experiences and reinforce learning.

Group Activity 3: Adapting Communications with the D.I.S.C. Model (coming soon)

This activity highlights adapting communication through the D.I.S.C. model, using EI to improve understanding with a short video, discussion, and role-playing exercises to reinforce learning.
